First-time / New Managers


The first time managers are a key part of the operational running of the college.  The manager role is a difficult one to juggle both staff and college expectations.  The main aim of the first time manager programme is to give the manager an introduction to the key skills that are required for management of tasks and people.


Module 1          Personal effectiveness (same module as previous level but more in-depth) –  Personal communication skills;  From colleague to manager;   Assertiveness;  Time management;  Motivating self and others

Module 2          All about teams (same module as previous level but more in-depth) –  Managing a team;  Running team meetings;  Team goal setting;  Introduction to coaching principles

Module 3          Leading for high performance – How to complete appraisals;  Performance management;  Individual goal setting;  Effective feedback

Module 4          Coaching and motivation – Concepts and theories;  Emotional intelligence;  Coaching for improvement;  Communication skills

A bridging module of one day will be offered to build on the aspiring manager modules to take the skills levels to a higher level and look at aspects in more depth.  Candidates who undertook the previous level programme will not need to repeat modules as they progress.


10-12 delegates maximum

Each module is one day in length.

The modules should be run with a few weeks in between for delegates to reflect, to complete homework and project work tasks.
