Annual Report 10/11
As Chair of the Board of Trustees of ACER, the Association of Colleges in the Eastern Region, it is my pleasure to introduce ACER’s Annual Report for 2010–2011.
I want to congratulate Andrew Thomson, the Chief Executive, and his team for successfully reshaping the organisation in tough economic times. ACER, like the whole FE sector, is in transition and has taken brave steps to reposition itself in a challenging economic environment. We had to reduce the overall cost base of the workforce, just as people have generally in FE and this has been achieved in a supportive and empathetic way.
As a result, ACER is opening up new thinking and has made considerable strides in a very short time. We have leaner, more efficient structures, more sustainable systems of expert professional networking, a stronger focus on spotting opportunities for private sector business, with reduced dependence on public funding and we are much better placed to compete for business with national organisations able to do things at lower cost.
Key commentators to ACER debates set up by Andrew Thomson have included Charles Leadbeater, former adviser to Tony Blair, and management guru, John Taylor. The excellent and experienced ACER Board members are proactive in shaping the agenda for the future and I am very confident as a result that ACER will continue to be relevant in the lives of its college members.
ACER will be taking a more strategic position in the region in 2011–2012. We expect to put college
students, enterprise and opportunity right at the centre of our ambition for a better future. Andrew’s expertise in directing national organisations, including the QIA will assist greatly in this process.
